is also called the Superfund, this U.S. statute,
administered by the EPA, provides funding and enforcement authority
for cleaning up existing hazardous waste sites and for responding to
hazardous substance spills. CERCLA encompasses industrial, commercial, and
non-commercial spills to water, ground water, soil, and air.
Petroleum and
natural gas are excluded from the CERCLA definition of "hazardous", but
are covered by a range of other health and environmental legislation.
