Ash Content from Petroleum Products

This method determines ash in the range 0.001 to 0.180 mass %.  It is applicable to fuels, oils, waxes and other petroleum products which do not contain ash-forming additives.  The sample required is according to the following:

Expected Ash, mass%                0.18    0.10    0.05    0.04    0.02    0.01    0.001
Test Specimen mass, grams        9        20        40      50       100     100     100

Products containing ash forming additive should be tested according to  Test Method D-874 (Sulfated Ash). Neither is it intended for the analysis of lubricating oils containing lead nor for used engine crankcase oils.
