Application Notes:

outer continental shelf

is the part of the continental margin that slopes gradually away from the shore to a point where a much steeper drop begins. The outer continental shelf may extend from a few miles to several hundred miles from the shore. It is much wider off the U.S. East and Gulf coasts, for example, than off the West Coast. Much of the remaining U.S. oil and gas resources are believed to lie beneath the outer continental shelf.
