is a measure of the solvency of a hydrocarbon; the higher
the kauri-butanol value, the greater the general solvent power of the
hydrocarbon. Under test conditions prescribed in test method
ASTM-D-1133, a
hydrocarbon sample is added to a standard solution of kauri gum in butyl
alcohol (butanol) until sufficient kauri gum precipitates to blur vision of
10-point type viewed through the flask. When used in varnish, lacquer, and
enamel formulations, a hydrocarbon diluent with a high kauri-butanol value
dissolves relatively large quantities of solids.
