dilution of engine oil


is a thinning of engine oil by seepage of fuel into the crankcase, as measured by test method ASTM-D-322, which indicates the volume percentage of fuel in the sample. Dilution is detrimental to lubrication, and may indicate defective engine components — such as worn piston rings — or improper fuel system adjustment.
