Application Notes:

dielectric strength
(breakdown voltage)

is the minimum voltage required to produce an electric arc through an oil sample, as measured by test method ASTM-D-877; hence, an indication of the insulating (arc preventive) properties of an electrical insulating oil. A low dielectric strength may indicate contamination, especially by water.

Also see power factor.
