Series 3

is an obsolete specification for heavy-duty engine oils used in Caterpillar Tractor Company diesel engines. Series 3 oils had to pass the Caterpillar 1-D diesel engine test with 1% sulphur fuel, plus the more highly super-charged 1-G test. Caterpillar discontinued its Series 3 approvals in October 1972.
